Then you have the side story of Brian DennehyвЂ™s shrewd NYPD detective sticking his nose into things and putting the pieces together on his own. One twist after another is uncovered leaving our special effects master Bryan Brown working overtime to keep all ten pints of blood in his body. The first film is a pulpy genre classic with great action and plenty of thrills to keep the blood pumping. The F/Xfilms are a ton of fun even if the second film is nowhere near as good as the first. Once again the only man who can get Rollie out of a jam is his old pal Leo. Only the sting goes terribly wrong leaving Rollie on the run with crooked cops and a mob hitman on RollieвЂ™s tail.

Now when his girlfriendвЂ™s police officer ex-husband needs RollieвЂ™s brand of talent to stop a knife-wielding serial killer, the ace special effects man canвЂ™t resist the challenge. In F/X 2 we find Rollie happily retired from the visual effects game, in a great relationship with a beautiful woman and her son. Now heвЂ™ll have to rely on his bag of tricks from the trade to find out whatвЂ™s really going on - and heвЂ™s going to get some unexpected help from the street-smart burnout detective Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy) who smelled a rat in the setup from the very beginning. Only the gig goes sideways when RollieвЂ™s employers try to kill him. As the best in the art of illusion, the Justice Department needs RollieвЂ™s help to make a fake execution of a mobster entering the witness protection program.

'FX2' is a bit better than that, but not much.In F/X we meet ace special effects man Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown). Aside from the children's thriller 'Cloak and Dagger,' his work is best described as lackluster. Director Richard Franklin, a self-described disciple of Alfred Hitchcock, wasn't paying enough attention either at worship or in class. Unfortunately, while the ideas are there, the execution is as flat as stale beer (which makes a fine hair conditioner, incidentally). These qualities are demonstrated in a supermarket fight scene in which ordinary groceries - chicken, hair spray, toilet paper and baked beans - enable him to hold off an enemy.

Basically Rollie is a handyman as familiar with the household hints of Heloise as he is with 'Star Wars' gadgetry.

Rollie has more in common with the phlegmatic TV scientist than with the average thriller protagonist, and that's the refreshing thing about both 'F/X' movies: Invention counts for more than guns and muscles, and smarts for more than boneheaded rage.

A cop-turned-shamus, Leo uses his contacts to get to the bottom of things, while his clever partner baffles the bad guys with Mr.

Rollie is reunited with an old buddy, Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy), early in the story, though they had just gotten to know each other in the last minutes of the original. With reluctance Rollie agrees to the dangerous scheme, which results in further escapades involving dirty cops, long-lost art objects, the Mafia and the Catholic Church. The three maintain a cordial relationship with her ex-husband (Tom Mason), a police detective who asks Rollie to help set a trap for a killer. In the five years since 'F/X,' the special effects man has become a successful maker of high-tech toys, with which he delights his girlfriend (Rachel Ticotin) and her 11-year-old son (Dominic Zamprogna). Still, it's an enjoyable bit of smoke and mirrors, thanks to the decency and resourcefulness of its hero. In this second time around for Bryan Brown as special effects whiz Rollie Tyler, the story line is little more than a shiny hat for holding the high-tech rabbits.
